Malaysia travel blog: arrival in Kuala Lumpur

After a 19 hour journey with a 2 hour stopover in Dubai, we finally arrived at our hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday night at 11.30pm hungry, tired and excited. Following a prompt check-in we headed straight out again to Jalan Alor, one of KL’s famous night hawker markets where you can grab some food for hardly any money at all.

There wasn’t a huge amount of ambient light and I wanted to use a lens that would give a fairly wide view so I took my 24mm f2.8 Nikkor which gives an equivalent field of view on the D7000 as a 35mm lens would on a full frame camera. The relatively fast aperture meant I could shoot without flash at a slow-ish shutter speed. The photo above was shot at 1/60s, f2.8, ISO 100. I probably could have used a higher ISO for this but these photos represent what the place looked like.

Our past experiences with first holiday meals has been pretty bad (or rather, disastrous). In the last 3 years we’ve been to Bali, Hong Kong, Thailand, Dubai, Prague, Paris, Barcelona and Amsterdam and in every one of those places, our first meal resulted in us getting ripped off and the food being particularly nasty just to top it off. Now, this isn’t because we are a couple of fools when it comes to choosing restaurants, we’re just usually knackered after a long journey (yeah even to Amsterdam).

Anyway, I’m delighted to announce that Kuala Lumpur broke the tradition:

We also had some delicious chicken satay, but I was too hungry to take photos and by the time I remembered it had all been devoured. Tired and stuffed, we headed back for some sleep. On the way back we came across this cute little fellow:

We are truly loving Kuala Lumpur. More soon…
